Cody Allen fights for the freedom of killer whales

Growing up in the town of Melbourne, Cody Allen remembers going hunting and fishing with his family. They were firm believers in sustainability, and grew or hunted about 30 percent of their food. Allen’s mother, a Native American, taught him that he should be thankful for each animal they killed, and be a caring steward of the environment around him.

It was in part due to his Native American family’s love for animals and the environment that Allen found himself questioning whether he was doing enough.

“I educated myself once I started to find out about environmental and ethical issues that surround the consumption of animals,” Allen said. “I wanted to become a more ethical person and consumer of whatever I’m consuming.”

He became vegan five years ago and became involved in activist groups in the Melbourne area, but his small town did not have a large activist community.
